Argos and Homebase join battery recycling trial
27 October 2006
Monday 30th October sees the launch of a WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) initiative to trial the return of used batteries to retailers.
Argos and Homebase have joined forces with other retailers to trial battery recycling through selected outlets across Swansea and Eastleigh as part of a nationwide initiative to divert batteries from landfill.
Shoppers will be able to pick up special collection boxes from participating stores, detailing how the scheme works and providing them with a handy container in which to store their unwanted batteries for recycling.
Promotional activity at the stores will feature a giant battery shaped car that will provide a backdrop. Promotional staff will be handing out special battery collection containers for shoppers to take home and store their used or unwanted batteries for recycling. They will also have leaflets and branded torches which will help to remind people why they should do the positive thing and recycle their batteries.
From Monday 30th October 2006 visitors will be able to dispose of their AA and AAA cells, sizes C and D, button, mobile phone and laptop batteries at in-store collection points at Argos at Parc Fforest-Fach and High Street Swansea and also the Eastleigh store; Homebase at Parc Tawe North, Swansea, Eastleigh and Southampton Hedge End.
Chris Davey from WRAP, said: “We want battery recycling to become second nature for shoppers and this trial has been designed to make it as easy as possible, simply grab your unwanted or used batteries before you leave home and bring them to the stores for recycling.
“This new scheme is an addition to the battery kerbside trials held all around the country and will help identifying how the UK could achieve the EU Batteries Directive recycling target of 25% by 2012.”
Laurence Singer, corporate responsibility manager for Home Retail Group, said: “We are pleased to be participating in this innovative trial and are keen to help our customers recycle their unwanted batteries.”
Argos and Homebase stores in Perth will also commence the trial in the New Year.
