Homebase wins Silver-Gilt medal at Hampton Court Flower Show 2008
08 July 2008
Homebase picked up a Silver-Gilt medal award yesterday at Hampton Court Flower Show 2008 for its ‘Room with a view’ show garden.
Managing Director, Paul Loft said: "I’m delighted that Homebase has won this award. Our presence at the show is a great example of succeeding through teamwork – so many different parts of the business have been involved in bringing the garden to life, both from stores and offices. Many congratulations to everyone who has played a role – we are very proud of this achievement.”
He added: “This year, visitors to the show will be able to take the ideas they see and replicate them in their own garden; the border plants can be bought via our online service - Homebase.co.uk/crocus."
110 Homebase store staff from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales were split into teams of five to build, maintain and break down the garden over a period of three weeks.
The garden is based on Rievaulx Terrace, the I8th Century landscape garden in Yorkshire, was designed by garden designer and writer, Philippa Pearson.
Philippa said. "The garden is the place to be for relaxing and entertaining with family and friends this summer. The garden building is a great place to sit, chill out and enjoy the changing seasonal vistas whilst environmentally friendly factors are easily incorporated into everyday living."
The ingenuity of the garden includes the various levels which Philippa has created throughout by means of 3-dimensional planting, layout and design. Whilst different visual moods are created, environmentally friendly aspects have also been considered in its construction. The building is constructed from FSC wood and has an eco roof garden to exploit the vistas and raised beds contain drought-tolerant plants that are planted in a recycled medium. The front edge of the roof garden is surrounded by sedum matting, which is grown in recycled foam mats – once old car seats and sofas.
The show, which runs from 8 to 13 July, at Hampton Court, East Molesey, Surrey is the largest flower show in the world.
