Homebase and Marie Curie Cancer Care smash two year target in a year
07 August 2007
- No Place Like Home campaign already funds home care for 550 terminally ill patients
Homebase employees and customers have raised a massive £550,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care in the first year of its first ever two year charity partnership.
The No Place Like Home campaign target of £500,000 has been smashed in less than a year, which means Homebase has already raised more than enough to enable one terminally ill person to be cared for in each store's local community – a magnificent 27,500 hours of home nursing.
Homebase staff across the company's 300 UK stores have been getting involved in a variety of fundraising events, ranging from participating in quizzes and dress down days to planting daffodils and playing charity cricket matches.
The partnership has also been embraced by Homebase customers who have purchased £17,000 worth of Marie Curie Cancer Care trolley keyrings and raised £8,000 through buying potted Tete a Tete daffodils.
Thomas Hughes-Hallett, Chief Executive of Marie Curie Cancer Care, said; “ Research shows that most people want to die at home. In reality half the population die in hospital, the place they least want to be. Marie Curie Cancer Care is working to give more people the choice they deserve. A new target of £1million for our partnership with Homebase will enable us to fund home care and support for 1,000 patients in communities across the country.”
Lorna Liggett, Community Affairs Manager at Homebase, said; "Staff and customers have really got behind the campaign and we're all hugely proud of what we've achieved. The partnership is a great way of raising both the store and charity's profile in the community as well as helping to motivate staff and enhancing local relationships with customers. With even more exciting activity to come we'll be able to reach a wider audience and have an even more positive impact.”
